The first season was aptly hosted by Jonathan Ross, and the second and third seasons onwards have been hosted by
Fool Us Host Hannigan.
Each episode starts off with an introduction that explains the reason for the series. Penn & Teller come out and take their seats towards the stage. The eager magicians will perform their acts before them in front of a an audience in the studio. Following each performance, Penn & Teller privately discuss the show while the host questions the magicians. Penn & Teller then reveal whether they are aware of how the trick was performed, usually using cryptic language or writing down the method and then present it to the magicians to confirm, so they are not divulging the secrets of the trick.
Season 12 will air on October 2nd, 2022.

Fool Us was filmed at Fountain Studios in London, England (season one) and the Penn and Teller Theatre at Las Vegas (season two onward). Each time a show is performed, when Penn & Teller cannot figure out how a trick was performed, the magician(s) who performed the trick get a Fool Us trophy and a five-star trip to Las Vegas to perform as the opening act in Penn & Teller’s show, also at the Rio Hotel & Casino.
The eleventh season premiered on 5 October 2021.
Teller notes that the doublespeak can help people learn new techniques without spoiling the trick. If Penn & Teller are wrong, or cannot come up with the method used to perform the trick, the magician wins the Fool Us trophy and the possibility of performing in one of Penn and Teller’s Las Vegas shows. A backstage judge, who is knowledgeable about the art of magician’s trade and is intimately informed how the trick is done ahead of the event, will make any important calls as to whether Penn & Teller were properly fooled. After each episode, Penn & Teller perform an act of magic of their own.
In the initial season, Jonathan Ross served as a temporary substitute for Penn and Teller’s hosting duties but they were back for the second season.
The film was shot on Fountain Studios in London, England for the first season, before moving to the Penn & Teller Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada for the second season, and later seasons.
The magicians presenting tricks on Penn & Teller “Fool Us” are generally accomplished sleight-of-hand artists and illusionists. They usually make it more difficult to understand how their trick is done by performing in near darkness or creating distraction through conversation or sounds.

From season three onwards, from season three, the top performers of the season who have successfully fooled Penn & Teller in Season 3 are invited back to appear on an exclusive episode of Fool Us in which they each get the chance to show off their tricks again and attempt to fool Penn and Teller for an additional $15000 prize.
While they are mute and in motion throughout the duration in the production, the veteran duo of Penn and Teller may communicate with each by making subtle gestures. They will also sometimes talk to a magician that performs and ask them to repeat an action or provide more information.
Penn and Teller are known for their contributions to the art of magic, such as publishing books on deceit and making instructional videos on the art of card tricks, and touring with their own magic show known as Penn and Teller: Fool Us.
